What is WSHIP insurance?

Washington State Health Insurance Pool or WHISP is the state’s high risk insurance pool. Created by the state legislature, it offers insurance to Washingtonians rejected in the individual market for health reasons.
With health reform, insurance companies no longer deny individual coverage due to health reasons. However, health reform does not apply to Medicare Supplement plans. Insurance companies can continue to reject or limit Medicare Supplement coverage due to health issues.
WSHIP sells the Medicare basic plan to Washingtonians in two situations. Either to people on Medicare who have been rejected due to health reasons by Medicare Supplement plans or to people who live in an area where plans do not offer coverage.
One can buy a WSHIP non Medicare individual health plan directly from an insurance company for he or she has to no longer answer questions about one’s health to buy an individual health plan.
