What is FFS insurance?

FFS stands for Fee- for- Services. Fee for services is a payment model in which doctors, hospitals, and medical practices take a separate charge for each type of service they perform. Under the fee for service model, the patient or insurance company is liable for paying any amount of charge that the health care provider charges for the service they provide. Fee for service model is currently predominant payment method in the United States.
In the health insurance and health care industries, fee for services occurs if doctors and other health care providers receive a fee for each service such as an office visit, test, procedure, or other health care services. Payments are issued only after services are provided.
Fee for service involves two separate policies: basic coverage and major medical coverage. Basic coverage helps in paying for normal daily health care, doctor visits, hospitalization and surgery. Major medical policy helps pay for the costs incurred by a serious injury or chronic illness.
